Mortgage Rates... Holding Steady, But Signs Point to Possible Improvement

Weekly Update – April 27, 2026

Mortgage bonds started the morning on shaky ground after two weeks of volatile trading that pushed rates higher. But we're starting to see signs of a rebound, as mortgage bonds attempt to stabilize—a positive sign that could help keep mortgage rates from moving higher, at least for now.

There’s been growing talk about the U.S. dollar potentially losing its reserve currency status, but in reality, the dollar remains much stronger than it was just a few years ago and continues to lead globally. Meanwhile, experts are pointing to a shrinking money supply—something that often signals slower economic growth ahead and, potentially, lower interest rates.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting on May 7. There's a chance we could see a weak GDP report before then, which could put more pressure on the Fed to begin cutting rates if the economy shows more signs of slowing.

Tariffs are also back in the conversation. While some Fed members see them as a short-term issue, others believe they could contribute to long-term economic headwinds—either way, this adds another layer of uncertainty to interest rate movements.

From a technical standpoint, it's a quiet news week. Mortgage bonds are up against a key ceiling of resistance (100-day Moving Average—see item #2) and need to push through for mortgage rates to move lower. For now, we’re floating carefully and watching market trends closely.
